Peter
Swanson
Born in 1950 Peter began working in potteries
from 1967 in between travelling to various parts of the world and absorbing
different cultures.
In 1974 he came to Cornwall to help his family move to St Ives and settled in
the county himself.
Self taught he established his own pottery in 1976 working in earthenware, over
the years his method of working has evolved, he now works in reduction fired
stoneware and porcelain, specialising in specific varieties of individual ash
glazed celadons, firing in his own self built gas fired kiln of some 36 cu.ft.
Producing domestic and individual pieces. Peter's work is sold mainly in the
West Country, through chosen outlets.
Visitors are welcome but if travelling any distance it is wise to telephone
first.
Ash Glazes
Ash glaze means that the glaze is made up from the ashes of the burnt wood.
As a tree grows it pulls many elements up through its roots. This includes
oxides of metal which give the glaze their individual coloured glazes, owing to
the make up of the soil. The glazes have no additional colouring oxides added at
all.
A good
selection of Peter's work is available from South West Crafts Gallery in
Tavistock, Devon and at Peter's pottery at Rosudgeon, which is well worth a
visit.
